Why Japan?

We chose Japan as a midpoint between much of where our families reside. A large part of our family also lives there now.

We are grateful you will join us in celebration.

Hyakkarou 百花籠

Nestled in the prestigious, historic Shirakabe district of Nagoya, Hyakkarou is a hidden architectural masterpiece. Its core philosophy is Wakon Yōsai — Japanese spirit seamlessly woven with Western ingenuity.

The venue beautifully resurrects the glamorous Taishō Roman era (the turn of the 20th century), a magical moment in history when traditional Japan met the grand romance of European romanticism. The result is a nostalgic yet avant-garde world where cinematic beauty comes to life.

Explore Nagoya

October falls right in autumn kōyō season in Japan — parks and countryside blaze with red, orange, and gold foliage. Temperatures are crisp and comfortable (around 12–18 °C / 54–64 °F). Pack a light jacket and get ready to be wowed.

Nagoya Castle framed by autumn maple leaves

Immerse yourself in history at Nagoya Castle, where the gold-leafed Hommaru Palace offers flat, easy walking paths. Just minutes from the venue, Tokugawaen is a majestic feudal-lord garden — a tranquil spot for traditional matcha by the water. Stroll the covered lanes of the Ōsu Kannon Shopping District for nostalgic street snacks, or dive into sleek Japanese engineering at the fully indoor SCMAGLEV and Railway Park.

Hitsumabushi — grilled eel over rice, served with condiments and broth Miso katsu — crispy pork cutlet with rich miso sauce

Food You Must Try

Nagoya meshi is famous for bold, savoury flavours anchored by a dark red miso called aka-miso. The crown jewel is hitsumabushi — premium grilled eel over rice, enjoyed three ways: plain, with fresh condiments, and finally as a comforting dashi soup. Don’t miss miso katsu, a crispy pork cutlet drizzled with sweet-savoury miso sauce, and tebasaki, deeply addictive pepper-seasoned fried chicken wings.

Practical Tips

Safety
Japan is very safe. You can generally walk nearly anywhere at any time of day.
Currency
Japanese Yen (¥). Foreign cards, as well as Google and Apple Pay work widely. A little cash is handy for smaller shops and restaurants. ATMs at 7-Eleven and Japan Post accept foreign cards.
Getting around
Subway: tap Visa/Mastercard or Apple/Google Pay at the gate. JR: IC card or paper ticket. Any IC card (manaca, TOICA, Suica, PASMO) works on trains and subway — buy at a station machine, top up there or at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart or Lawson.
Language
English signage is common in tourist areas and on trains. The camera in Google Translate is especially helpful for menus and signs.
Wi-Fi & roaming
Most international phone plans work in Japan for roaming, so many guests will not need a pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM. If your plan does not include Japan, you can rent a pocket Wi-Fi at the airport or buy a data SIM or eSIM — helpful for maps and transit apps.

Etiquette

Japan is a country of customs and rules. Following a few small ones is the kindest way to show respect.

  • While texting and silent use of phones are fine, avoid holding phone calls on trains or buses.
  • Keep voices low in public spaces and on public transit.
  • There is no tipping; attempts to can even confuse service providers. Excellent service is generally a virtue in Japan.
  • Eating or drinking while walking or commuting is generally considered taboo.
  • Public trash cans are uncommon — carry your trash until you find one, or back to your hotel.
  • On crowded trains, wear your backpack on the front so you don’t bump others.
  • Masks are commonly worn for a variety of reasons out of respect for others. If you are feeling under the weather, we kindly encourage you to wear one.
  • Please be ready to remove your shoes in homes, temples, some restaurants, and other indoor spaces — look for a step or slippers at the entrance.
